Dream Bars

Of all the cookies which have made a hit with young and old, Dream Bars are far and away the leader. This is one of the top dozen all-time favorite Sunset recipes.

They are really more a candy than cooky very rich and sweet.

1/2 cup (1/2 lb.) butter or margarine 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

1 cup unsifted regular all-purpose flour

2 eggs

1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons flour 1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cups shredded coconut

1 cup chopped nuts Orange Butter Frosting (recipe follows)

Mix butter, the 1/2 cup brown sugar, and the 1 cup flour with fingers or fork into a crumbly mass; pat into an 8 by 12-inch baking pan, covering the bottom evenly. Bake in a 375° oven for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Beat the eggs, the 1 cup brown sugar, and vanilla together. Mix the 2 tablespoons flour, salt, and baking powder. Sprinkle over the coconut and nuts; mix to coat. Add to the egg-sugar mixture and blend. Pour mixture onto the baked crust, spread evenly, and bake in a 375° oven for 20 minutes. Cool slightly. Use a sharp knife to cut into bars about 1 inch wide and 2 inches long while still warm; frost with Orange Butter Frosting. Makes 4 dozen.
